Books With No Bounds

LKS is currently collecting books and school supplies for children in need.
Books With No Bounds is a charity founded by two sisters who live in Oakville, Ontario. Their mandate is to collect books and other supplies and send them to children who are in need; specifically Canadian indigenous children in the north.  Right now, they are running low on basic school supplies such as pencils, pencil crayons, markers, art supplies, rulers, erasers, etc.  LKS will accept donations of new, unused school supplies until Friday March 3rd. Please drop off any items in the classroom. Thank you so much for your support.

- Please submit the field trip form to see the Hockey Sweater as soon as possible. The forms were sent home on Friday. Please pay online by March 10th.

Ms. Hazlett's Grade 3/4 class taught us how to use sphero balls. The children used iPads to move their sphero balls in different directions and speed. It was a blast!

Mathematics:
We have finished our geometry unit on 2D shapes and 3D solids. For the next couple of weeks, we will be focusing on the one hundred chart. Last week, we looked for patterns in the chart and played a group game which involves skip counting by 2s. Here is a video that we watched in class. It's quite catchy. Hundreds Chart Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWg5yCu4V8A

Ten More Game- The children took turns rolling the die and added 10 to the number of dots rolled.

Art: We sculpted clay pots with the leftover clay from Harbourfront.

Science: The children participated in two STEM activities.

First challenge: Build a strong bridge that can support as many plastic tiles as possible. The children were provided with two pieces of paper and two cups.
Second challenge: Build a strong bridge that can support two or more wooden blocks. The children were provided with ten straws and two cups. Eventually, they were allowed to use some tape. I absolutely loved watching everyone as they worked together in pairs. They collaborated, problem solved and had a lot of fun building their structures. Unfortunately I took photos with my camera and not my phone- this is why I haven't posted any photos. Oops!

Language:  We have finished our mini unit on letter writing. Please ask your child about the 5 parts of a friendly letter. All your child's letters will be stapled and sent home shortly.

We continue to build our reading stamina while I meet with students and read in small groups. The children are choosing "just right" books and learning to relax and read quietly. Please ask your child about Bob (with stamina) and Joe (without stamina). Please continue to read with your child every night. Thank you for all your support!

Reminders/News:
I have dropped off our cat food donations at the Toronto Cat Rescue Centre located near Lambton Kingsway. Thank you for those who donated and supported our little fundraiser. The woman working at the centre was almost in tears when she heard my story and saw the beautiful poster made by Barbara and Kara. She took down my contact information so that the director can contact me. I was told that she may even come by the school with a kitten or two! Fingers crossed!

- Please ensure that your child has indoor and outdoor shoes. The playground has been quite muddy lately and the students have been bringing in a lot of mud. Our caretaker has been working hard to keep our hallways clean and safe. Thank you for your understanding.
- The students did a fantastic job presenting their 100th day of school projects! The kids were so creative with their 100 objects and very excited to share :) Please remember how important it is for your child to learn to take responsibility for their own work. The final projects/products all looked great, however the process and the learning that took place was the most important part.
- Thank you to all the parents for reading with the students.
- Thank you for bringing in treats for our Valentine's Day. What a yummy afternoon!

What a busy, busy week! Take a look......

We also discussed what makes our heart full and happy. The children wrote what makes their heart full and drew pictures to go along with their writing.

We took Thursday morning off to simply relax our bodies. We talked about our classroom conflicts and our rules and consequences. We had a rough Wednesday afternoon filled with arguments, tattle tailing and even some tears. On Thursday, we read a story called Moody Cow Meditates- ask your child to retell the story for you. We talked about various strategies that we can use when we are upset. We also participated in some breathing exercises and the children shared what they do when they are feeling upset. The children took turns putting sparkles inside of a glass jar. The clear water in the jar represents our clear mind. The sparkles represent all our anger, bad thoughts and our mistakes. We took turns shaking our jar and watched the sparklers settle down. Our thoughts were settling down as well and we were feeling much more relaxed. We used our Minds Jar at the end of the day to share all the wonderful things that everyone did throughout the day. The children talked about helping others at recess, solving their problems with words, sharing materials and respecting other people.

News/Reminders:
- 100th Day of School Project: Please ensure that your child brings in their 100 objects to school this week. The students will have an opportunity to present their project in front of the class. Your child may practise talking about their counting strategy, where they got the objects and who helped them with the project. I can't wait to hear everyone's presentations!

- Report Cards go home at the end of the school day on Monday. Feb. 13th. Please sign and return the brown report card envelope so that it may be returned to you in June during the second term report cards.

- Students' 100 day collections are due the week of Feb. 13- Feb. 16. Notes have been sent home. Please let me know if you have any questions.
- Please ensure that your child brings back their green workbook to school every week with the worksheets placed inside. It is much easier when everything is kept together in one place, rather than receiving single sheets throughout the week. Thank you for your help.
- We attended an assembly on Friday morning for the QSP cookie dough fundraising project. Information was sent home in your child's mailbag on Friday with the youngest child in each family.

Barbara and Kara have decided to begin their own fundraiser to help rescued cats in Toronto. They have been busy creating posters and informing staff and students about their initiative. The other students in the class have been influenced by their hard work and dedication. Some of the students have decided to create posters for general pet food donations. However, the girls are strongly sticking to cat food donations ONLY.

The girls and I have done some research and found out that Toronto Cat Rescue is a shelter which provides foster care for rescued cats before they are adopted. There is one location in Etobicoke. I have reminded the girls that they should not be asking for any money, however they are welcome to ask staff and students for any extra cat food that they may have at home.

In fact, if you have any cat food OR any pet food that you would like to get rid of, please send it to school with your child. I certainly do not want anyone to go out of their way to buy any food. This is a huge initiative for the girls and I support their dedication and hard work. Here is the website: www.torontocatrescue.ca if you would like more information. I will drop off any food that gets donated. There are also other items that you may donate listed on the website. Thank you.
Way to go, Kara and Barbara!

What did we do all week?
In Social Studies, we are learning about our local community. The students are learning to ask meaningful questions which will lead to further discussions. Asking "good", open-ended questions is not an easy task. We are learning to ask "thick" questions which take more thinking time and research to answer.

We celebrated Groundhog Day on Thursday!

STEM Challenge: Make the tallest tower
(science, technology, engineering, math)
During our STEM activities, I have the opportunity to observe my students as they work together, encourage each other and come up with new ideas. At the beginning, I could hear a lot of "YOU ARE COPYING US! STOP LOOKING AT US!" However, now the children have learned that taking another group's ideas isn't exactly STEALING or CHEATING. They are learning to use each other's ideas to improve their own work.

Literacy Centres: magnetic letters and sentence building

Math: We learned about 2D (flat) shapes

We love geoboards !!

We began learning about 3D solids.
We used different solids to build our own creations.
We built skateboarding parks, farms, parks, castles, towns etc.
